What is Heat Soaking?


Heat soaking is a destructive test treatment that takes place after gkass toughening. The finished glass is placed into a large heat soaking oven and heated to extreme temperatures. After being heated to around 290 degrees Celsius and held at that temperature for approximately 2 hours, it is removed from the oven facility. During this thermal treatment, any glass containing nickel sulphide is forced to shatter, leaving behind only the panes with a reduced risk. The risk of spontaneous breakage for heat soaked glass drops dramatically from 1m2 in every 10,000m2 to just 1m2 in every 1 million m2.

Heat Soaked vs. Heat Strengthened

It is a quality control process carried out by placing toughened glass panels inside an oven chamber and subject the glass to a prolonged temperature up to 290 degrees Celsius in a controlled cycle to accelerate nickel sulphide expansion. As a result, glass containing nickel sulphide inclusions are more likely to break in the heat soak chamber, thus reducing the risk of potential breakages after installation.

Why do we heat soak? Heat soaking helps to identify any impurities in the glass during the process. Panels containing nickel sulfide are more likely to break during this process.

Will the heat soak process prevent toughened glass from exploding? The heat soaking process does not 100% guarantee glass will not explode spontaneously at a later time. It is an additional service to help prevent a spontaneous breakage in future.

Heat Strengthened Glass

Heat strengthening is a process applied to ordinary annealed float. It is processed through the furnace (similar to toughened glass). Heat strengthened glass is approximately 2 times stronger than ordinary annealed whereas toughened glass is approximately 5 times stronger than ordinary annealed and also grade a safety glass. Heat strengthened glass, when broken will break into large pieces and will not shatter into smaller pieces like toughened glass.

When would we need heat strengthened process? Often heat strengthened glass is used in laminated glass. Over head glass canopies will often combine a laminated make up using a toughened panel to the outside surface and a heat strengthened panel to the bottom surface. If the heat strengthened panel was to break, because it breaks in large pieces (unlike toughened crumbling into small pieces) the panel will stay intact.

Where Heat Soaked Glass Should be Considered?

We recommend clients consider heat soaking for the following applications:

1. Frameless glass balustrades: If a frameless, cantilevered or structural glass balustrade shatters, the absence of any kind of frame or handrail could pose a significant safety risk

2. Infill glass balustrades: If fallout from a glass balustrade is going to be a significant issue, for example if the balustrade is on an overhead balcony or a mezzanine floor, we would recommend heat soaking.

3. Exterior glass doors: A shattered toughened glass door would pose a significant security risk to both commercial and domestic sites.

4. Sloped overhead glazing: Again, the potential risk of shattered toughened glass falling on people from overhead glazing makes this a candidate for heat soaking.

5. Glass spandrels: Shattered toughened glass spandrels could pose a risk to the public from falling glass, as well as being a major inconvenience to replace.
